HSMP (Highly Skilled Migrant Programme) has now been replaced with the UK's Points-Based System. Tier 1 (General) Visas are almost identical to the previous HSMP system.
Applications for immigration to the UK as a highly skilled migrant must now be made under the points based system. Similarly, if you are already in the UK on a Student visa or a Work Permit, you will need to apply under the HSMP replacement system.
The Tier 1 (General) Migrant scheme has been rolled out as part of the UK Border Agency's Points Base System. It is aimed at highly skilled individuals seeking to remain or enter the United Kingdom for employment purposes and replaces the High Skilled Migrant Programme.
As with HSMP applications, Tier 1 Migrants are expected to demonstrate their skills through a point scoring exercise, which is broken down into three sections. Applicants must first be able to meet a minimum 75 points under the attributes section, as under the HSMP programme.
The changes from HSMP to the new points system are only minor. The main change from HSMP is that working holidaymakers, usually from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa can no longer switch from their current visas to the new points-based system from within the UK. Visa applications can be prepared while you are in the UK, but you will need to return home before the application form can be submitted either in person or online.
The second major change worth noting is that applicants must now show they have savings to support themselves, before a visa application for the visa will be approved. A further 10 points must be earned for the savings/maintenance requirement.
Tier 1 General versus UK Work Permits
The Tier 1 General visa has distinct advantages over a UK Work Permit. Unlike a UK Work Permit, applicants do not need a specific job offer in the UK before they apply. It is not necessary for an employer to sponsor an individual, meaning that you will not be tied to an employer.
