Applicants will be awarded points depending on their age (as below). No points are awarded if the applicant is over 41 years of age under any circumstances.

If an applicant is applying for a Tier 1 (General) Highly Skilled visa, the applicant will receive a different number of points for their age, depending on their circumstances. The four different sets of circumstances are:

1. the applicant does not currently hold either:
   • a previous Tier 1 (General) visa that is due for extension,
   • a HSMP visa that is due for extension under the Tier 1 (General) rules, 
   • a Self-empoyed Lawyer visa,
   • a Writers visa,
   • an Artists visa, or
   • a Composers visa;
2. the applicant currently has a Tier 1 (General) visa that is due for extension and the applicant's initial Tier 1 (General) visa was issued before 6 April 2010, or the applicant holds a Self-employed Lawyer, Writers, Artists, or Composers visa; or
3. the applicant currently has a Tier 1 (General) visa that is due for extension and the applicant's initial Tier 1 (General) visa was issued on or after 6 April 2010; or
4. the applicant currently holds a HSMP visa that is due for extension under the Tier 1 (General) rules.
