The UK has announced a radical overhaul of the immigration system in the UK and will look at assessing those who want to work in the UK in a more targetted way.
Tier 1 of the Points Based System (PBS) will come into effect at the end of June 2008 for applicants from all over the world. Tier 1 PBS is really aimed at those applicants who have enhanced or significant or who wish to establish themselves for business or investment reasons here in the United Kingdom. The categories that make up the new system are:
- Tier 1 General
- Tier 1 Post-study Work
- Tier 1 Investors and Entrepreneurs.
The Tier 1 categories above will replace 8 categories. These are:
- HSMP,
- Business Visas
- Fresh Talent scheme
- IGS
- Innovators
- Investors
- Lawyers who are self employed
- Writers, composers and artists.
Any applications made under any of the categories listed above, after the date of implementation for the new Tier 1 PBS will be returned to the applicant and/or refused. Those already in the United Kingdom under one of these categories wishing to extend their stay will need to apply under one of the revised Tier 1 categories.
The new Tier 1 (General) PBS for age, past earnings, UK experience, and education has not changed markedly from the HSMP system but English requirements are a notch higher.
The UK is a great place to work and develop for those with the skills required which is what makes it so popular. A points based system is touted as the best way to source those skills and experts have likened the UK’s new PBS to points based systems in other parts of the world.
