The new UK immigration system based on points (“PBS”) will give points to those applying for visas and work permits based on age, earnings and qualifications.
Sector specific advocates such as those from the IT industry say it will result in businesses being able to fill genuine IT professional shortages by allowing them to recruit specialist skilled workers from abroad as required, in a more transparent and consistent fashion.
The PBS has been touted as significant in that it finally recognises that there are indeed needs for certain industries to go overseas for their recruitment needs and the IT sector is no different.
Some critics have spoken out saying it is an easier way to get around sorting out the issues within the UK employment system – i.e that recruiting from abroad will result in a lazier approach to hiring women and those who need more training or help re-entering the workforce.
