The Home Office must re think changes to rules for visas for those doctors who are trained abroad, a Glasgow politician said earlier this week.

The government stated earlier this year that any training doctor from the United Kingdom or EU, even where not as qualified as a person from outside those regions, had to be given priority over doctors from other parts of the world. Critics have vociferously argued that plans had been rushed through and that there are in fact little or no transitional arrangements for doctors who are training now or who are caught by the changes.

If these changes are implemented  Scotland could effectively lose roughly 14% of its health employees. Current estimates show that just under 16,000 medical professionals are working in hospitals in Britain, as they conclude training to become more highly trained medical practitioners.
