A recent proposal coming from the EU has seen a shift in policy to allow for more skilled workers to come into the EU from all over the world. More migrants are required to ensure that there are sufficiently skilled workers to ensure the needs of employers are met. More needs to be done to ensure that engineers, IT professionals and other skilled workers can be attracted to the EU and advocates have argued that these professionals need to be wooed from other “preferred” parts of the world.
It is anticipated that by 2009, the Commission will streamline transferees from abroad who have located to one country in the EU so that their permits can be used elsewhere in other countries in the EU without hassle.
Clearly the debate needs to extend to non-skilled or low skilled workers to ensure that all of the needs of the EU economy are met.
