Those who use false passports to enter Australia will be the subject of intensive investigations in a crackdown of its kind not yet seen to date. The new and urgent focus on this area of crime will cost around $11.7million.
Document forgery is a serious precursor to terrorism and crime in Australia and the wider pacific region. In fact, nearly 40 000 passports issued by countries in the Asia Pacific region had been lost or stolen.
The Australian Government has recently launched the ePassport scheme, which will replace all Australian passports with documents that rely on biometric data.
