Australia allows German doctor to stay
A German doctor was initially refused permission to stay in Australia simply because his son has Down’s Syndrome. Bernhard Moeller migrated to Australia two years ago. He was accompanied by his wife and three children.
Australia has a critical shortage of healthcare professionals, particularly in regional and rural areas. Dr Moeller worked in the rural areas of Victoria. Many migrant health care professionals are employed in Australia’s over-stretched health care system.
Dr Moeller was initially informed that he had to leave Australia because his son failed health tests that are imposed on migrants.
The Immigration Minister has now confirmed that Dr Moeller and his family will be able to stay. The Immigration Minister has reported that he has intervened in the case as he was satisfied that the doctor is making a positive contribution to Australia.
The Immigration Minister has also promised to change the laws to ensure that similar cases are avoided in future.
