It is possible for foreign nationals to retire in the UK provided they are over sixty and can prove an income of £25 000 per year 'without working' and a close connection to the UK. There is no definition of what constitutes a 'close connection' however, it can be satisfied if you have a close relative in the UK, you have previously lived in the UK, you have business connections or interests in the UK or you feel you have a strong sense of identity with the UK
Although the requirements state that you must prove you receive a certain income without working, you are permitted to work in the management of your investments (including property investments) in the UK.
The holding on non-executive directorships may also be permitted.
Visa applications for Independent Means must be made to the British Embassy or Consulate in your home country. If your application is successfully, you will be granted with a four year visa. Once you have spent four years in the UK and you still have the required income, you may be entitled to Indefinite Leave to Remain.
