Overview of visas

Foreign workers interested in moving to Canada, will need to have a good job and authorisation allowing them to take up employment in Canada. There are two alternatives for working in Canada. One is to travel to Canada on a temporary Canada visa and once there apply for a work permit. The other is by becoming a permanent resident of Canada.

Temporary visas

In order to be allowed to work in Canada, applicants are required to get an Employment Authorization (EA) after which they can travel to Canada with a visitor's visa. One of the requirements for obtaining an EA is that applicants must have already been offered a job in Canada which needs to be confirmed by the Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC). This requires your potential employer to show that the position offered was not able to be filled by a Canadian resident or citizen. This process can be difficult unless you are either a Software professional, an associate of the Youth Exchange Program or alternatively, the spouse of a Highly Skilled Temporary Worker.

This visa remains temporary. Once your employment is terminated, you will no longer be able to remain in Canada. If applicants wish to move to Canada permanently, they should consider applying to become a permanent resident in Canada.

Permanent visas

In order to be eligible for a permanent visa in Canada, applicants will need to prove they have experience in a job that is on the Canadian Occupation List. This visa operates on a points based criteria and therefore has certain requirements that need to be satisfied before it can be granted. Having lived in Canada before and looked for appropriate employment are useful aspects in gaining the requisite points to be granted a visa.

Close relatives for example a spouse, child, mother or father are usually granted a Canadian visa if they are sponsored by a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Normally, the sponsor is required to prove that he/she has adequate funds to support their relative in addition to guaranteeing to return any money from welfare that may have been paid to the applicant in the ten years subsequent to their arrival in Canada.
