Britain’s immigrant communities more diverse than ever

Britain’s demographic makeup is more diverse than ever. The changes demonstrate just how remarkably the face of Britain has changed in last 10 to 15 years.

A surge in migrants shows that in 2001, more than 7.5% of the population was comprised of migrants – a 2% increase from 1991.  In terms of numbers, that is just over 1 million people.

The largest numbers of immigrants come from India and Pakistan. The next most popular countries of origin are the USA and Germany. Countries from the Baltic states have also contributed markedly to the increase – by about 300%.

Immigrants from New Zealand and Australia have the highest employment rates whilst those from Somalia and Angola show a higher level of unemployment.
