Interdependant Parter visas are generally for same sex partners. The visa will allow you to live in Australia on the basis of your interdependent relationship.

The two visa stages that apply to this category are:

  • an initial temporary visa, which is granted for 2 years. The temporary visa starts from the date of initial application;
  • a permanent visa, which has to time limit.

Eligibility

To be eligible for an Interdependant Partner visa, your partner must be either:

  • an Australian permanent resident or citizen
  • an eligible New Zealand citizen

You must satisfy these requirements:

  • you are in an interdependent relationship,
  • you have been with your partner for at least the 12 months preceding your application,
  • your partner is able to sponsor you,
  • your relationship is genuine and ongoing,
  • you have a commitment to a shared life, living together, with the exclusion of all others,
  • any separation must only be temporary, and
  • you and your partner are both over the age of 18 when the application is submitted.

You may apply for an Interdependent from within Australia, if you hold a valid visa at the time. Otherwise, you may also apply from overseas.

The interdependent visa is a temporary visa and once it has been granted, is active for two years. If at the end of two years, your relationship remains genuine and ongoing, you may be eligible for a Permanent visa.
